Business executives should voice their concerns over U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s plan to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian products, the Ontario premier said Monday morning. “We need all Canadian CEOs to start speaking up [with their] U.S. counterparts,” Ford told reporters ahead of a premiers’ meeting in Mississauga, Ont. “I think our voice is getting louder and louder.” (The Logic)
Talking point: Ford’s call to business leaders comes after he met with some of the country’s top CEOs a day earlier. The premier said he was “glad to see” the heads of large companies south of the border speaking out, as chief executives in the U.S. have hired consulting firms and sought discussions with the president-elect in response to his tariff plans. LG Electronics USA, semiconductor manufacturing company GlobalFoundries, and alcohol producer Constellation Brands have all reportedly tapped consulting or lobbying firms on the issue. Ontario’s large manufacturing industry is expected to be hit hard by the proposed tariffs.
