Talking point: The investment vehicle could help Deloitte serve its existing clients by boosting technologies that are useful to them. It claims the fund represents the largest capital commitment to date from a Canadian professional-services firm. The country has traditionally punched below its weight in corporate VC relative to its global GDP. But more corporations—including BlackBerry, Shopify and Spin Master—are now entering the space. Corporations may invest in startups adjacent to their core business instead of seeking acquisitions, given the huge amounts of capital that’s providing startups ample choice on deals and fuelling record-high valuations. Spin Master chair Ronnen Harary said the firm launched its US$100-million fund in October 2021 after being priced out of several acquisition attempts. Meanwhile, Thomson Reuters has reportedly tapped Tamara Steffens, former general manager and managing director of Microsoft’s venture fund, to help build the media conglomerate’s new VC initiative.
