Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board are said to be two potential bidders for a US$2 billion, or at least 10 per cent, stake in the Brazilian mining giant’s base metals unit. The division could be valued between US$20 billion to US$25 billion. (Bloomberg)
Talking point: The successful bidder will buy into a rapidly changing business, as Tesla-supplier Vale shifts 30 to 40 per cent of its nickel toward electric vehicles. CPP Investments has been eyeing local investments, and Canada’s federal government is attempting to lure pension funds to cleantech deals. Vale has operations in Ontario, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador and is working on a plant in Quebec. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Mitsui & Co., Mubadala Investment and Qatar Investment Authority are also reportedly considering offers. Vale, CPP Investments and OTTP declined The Logic’s requests for comment.
