Talking point: Fibre cable can handle the internet speeds necessary for 5G, and Cogeco Peer 1 has 3,300 kms of cable in the greater Toronto and Montreal regions. The deal could make Data Colony one of the largest 5G players in Canada, particularly if the firm can land clients in Toronto and Montreal’s financial districts, both of which have fair degrees of fibre cable already. To buttress those efforts Cogeco Peer 1 is also seeking to expand its data centre services. Those services currently focus on corporate clients, which may help it land some of those 5G deals.
