Citigroup is the first bank in the U.S. to publish an unadjusted gender pay-gap report, revealing that women in its workforce make 29 per cent less than men, and people of colour earn seven per cent less than their white colleagues. The report also found that women make up over half of Citigroup’s workforce, but only made up 37 per cent of leadership positions, from the assistant vice-president level through to the managing director level. (Bloomberg)

Talking point: The report is consistent with patterns across many companies, large and small. In Canada, a report from Move The Dial in 2017 found that only three of the 25 top executive positions at the country’s five largest banks were held by women. It also found that women make up just 13 per cent of the average tech company’s executive team, while 53 per cent of tech companies have no women executives at all.
