Talking point: Part of this comes from a global slowdown in overseas investment from China. It’s largely tied to foreign investment restrictions, which were put in place to stop money from leaving the country, in an attempt to stabilize its currency. Beyond that, other contributing factors could include Ottawa blocking the $1.51-billion takeover of construction firm Aecon by a Chinese state-owned enterprise last year, stalled free-trade negotiations between the two countries and the ongoing diplomatic dispute stemming from Meng’s arrest. The Canadian tech sector is also affected: Chinese investment in the information technology sector falling 94 per cent to $26 million in 2018, compared to a year earlier.
