The Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec owned 479,000 shares of the Ottawa-based e-commerce company at the end of March, up from 155,567 at the end of last year and none at the end of September 2020. The pension fund told La Presse it does not comment on its active-management investment strategy. (La Presse)
Talking point: At Friday’s opening price of $1,473.99, the stake in Shopify is worth just over $706 million. The Caisse has been an active backer of other Canadian tech firms that facilitate commerce in both the private and public markets. It led point-of-sale company Lightspeed’s Series D round in October 2017, and retains a sizable position, which was worth US$1.53 billion as of March 31. It also funded Nuvei, participating in the payment firm’s December 2019 US$270-million equity round.
