Cannabis gives Canadian stocks their best high in 19 years

The S&P/TSX Composite is having its best quarter since 2000, with cannabis stocks leading the way. Meanwhile, six months after legalization, cannabis retail stores across Ontario opened for business Monday. Out of the 25 stores government planned to launch on April 1, only 10 were given the go-ahead to open. (Bloomberg)

Talking point: Some analysts expect Canadian markets to slow in the next year or so, impacted by slowing economic growth in the U.S. The success of Canadian stocks aren’t all tied to weed, even with cannabis companies making up six out of the composite’s top 10 performers. Utility stocks are having a comeback, outpacing the Toronto Stock Exchange. Companies like Emera, Canadian Utilities, AltaGas and TransCanada have grown more than 16 per cent each since January, compared to the S&P/TSX’s 12 per cent in the same time frame.
