Hiring for tech companies still hasn’t rebounded since plummeting in 2023 following aggressive hiring sprees the year before, according to a report from job-search site Indeed. As of Aug. 15, Canadian tech postings were down 19 per cent compared to February 2020. (The Logic)

Talking point: The report identified two factors contributing to the prolonged hiring freeze: high interest rates following the pandemic-era hiring frenzy and the rise of AI. While tech postings had already dropped by about half by the time ChatGPT was released in late 2022, the report noted AI may be thwarting the rebound. Indeed found “substantial overlap” in what generative AI can do and skills and tasks listed in job descriptions, “meaning automation of some of the tasks performed in these roles could be driving their drop in job postings.” Mid-level and junior positions—often the first to be automated—were hit particularly hard, with postings down 25 per cent compared to five years ago.
