Talking point: Vaccines have had most of the attention in the fight against COVID-19 but therapeutics are for helping people who catch an illness regardless of vaccination. Pfizer’s Paxlovid, for instance, has been shown in trials to cut the risk of serious illness from COVID-19 in people who test positive. Though Cumming made his fortune in Alberta, he told The Globe and Mail he’s contributing to the Australian centre because he believes Melbourne can become a world-class site for biomedical research. Canada wants such capacity but is in the early stages of building it; Australia has pledged A$650 million for the larger institution where the therapeutics centre will be housed. Cumming previously gave $100 million to the medical school at the University of Calgary.
