The 3 Canadian Space Division’s assignment is to “streamline, focus, and improve how space-based capabilities support critical [military] requirements such as communications, command and control, navigation, weather and situational awareness,” said the announcement from the Department of National Defence. (The Logic)
Talking point: The division is being formed out of a pre-existing space-focused directorate in the air force, and remains under the overall command of the RCAF. When The Logic first reported on the plans in February, experts said Canada was late to recognize that space had already become a fighting domain, not just a venue for supporting air, land and sea operations. But the unit will be small: the announcement said it will grow from 90 to 175, making it about the size of a typical army company. In an email, spokesperson Maj. Jill Lawrence said another 80 or so personnel in the air force will work on space matters outside the division.
