François-Philippe Champagne said Tuesday he expects to bring a “constructive spirit” to his planned conversation with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as G20 finance ministers gather in Asheville, N.C., but also expects to speak firmly about Canada-U.S. trade. (The Logic)
Talking point: “We’ve been very clear that we’re going to stand up for our workers, for our industries and for Canada,” Champagne said ahead of his tête-à-tête. His message to the wider G20 is that Canada wants to “restore a level playing field” on trade. On Monday, Bessent derided Canada’s ability to respond to the new 50 per cent tariffs on nearly $28 billion worth of Canadian goods. Canada’s retaliatory duties on the equivalent value of U.S. imports take effect Sept. 8. “We’re not at war with Canada… are they going to take their two submarines from the Edmonton mall and sic ’em on us?” Bessent told CNBC.
