Talking point: Backed by General Motors, Panasonic, Mitsui and others, NMG is seeking to commercialize a graphite-based battery anode material that could be used in next-generation electric vehicles. The company is developing its Matawinie graphite mine north of Montreal, and a complementary battery-materials facility near Bécancour, Que. This is the CGF’s first-ever direct equity investment, and comes as government bodies increasingly invest in strategic metals companies in an effort to secure supply. The U.S. Department of Energy on Monday backed Nova Scotia graphite firm Novonix, for example, as it looks to lessen China’s grip on the market.
