Canada issued draft regulations Monday to curb methane emissions in the oil and gas sector, following an earlier commitment to cut methane emissions in the sector by 75 per cent below 2012 levels by 2030. Talking point: Anna Kanduth, a director at the Canadian Climate Institute, said in a statement that Canada’s methane pledge is “a no-brainer” that will help the oil and gas sector get at least a third of the way to achieving Ottawa’s emissions targets. Kanduth said, however, that the target was “a floor, not a ceiling, of what’s possible,” noting that some of the world’s largest oil and gas producers have already committed to net-zero methane emissions by 2030. Meanwhile, European Union president Ursula von der Leyen called on all countries to support tripling renewable energy targets in the final agreement signed at the end of the two-week negotiations.
