Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc met U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington, D.C., on Friday to discuss the coming review of the North American trade pact. Talking point: The Trump administration wants the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to address the “surge in investment” from “non-market economies.” In an essay this week for the Brookings Institution, LeBlanc wrote that Canada was “also concerned by the impacts of non-market policies and practices” on its economic security, especially in energy, critical minerals and metals. The USMCA can help, he argued. “These dynamics underscore the need for trusted partners to work together and take action to secure the critical sectors and resources necessary to maintain the competitiveness of our own markets.”
