Talking point: After settling with an activist investor, Calian is trying to position itself as the bringer of innovation to Canada’s big defence spending spree. The firm is setting up labs at which it will co-develop technologies with smaller companies in areas like communications, intelligence and targeting. Cohere, championed by the federal government, has become an AI of choice for firms trying to sell to the Canadian Armed Forces. Its agreement with Calian follows similar deals to work together with Saab on planes and Thales, Hanwha and TKMS on ships.
