Talking point: The company, whose backers include the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and BDC Capital, said the opening puts it in a competitive position ahead of a demanding holiday season that’s expected to be plagued with supply chain issues stemming from the pandemic. Compounding the problem: people are ready to shop again. PwC expects Canadians to spend 29 per cent more this holiday season than last, shelling out an average of $1,420. Deloitte pegs that figure even higher, at $1,841. Intelcom has more than 60 facilities across Canada and plans to add automation technology to more of its warehouses, starting with Montreal early next year. The newest facility also marks a change in how Intelcom operates, moving to a hub-and-spoke model where one warehouse redirects packages to other facilities before delivering them to consumers. That’s similar to how Amazon—a company that’s been rapidly growing its Canadian footprint in recent years—operates.
