The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and tax firm Ryan LLC filed lawsuits against the Federal Trade Commission Wednesday, after the regulator voted to ban non-compete contracts used to prevent workers from joining rival firms. (The Wall Street Journal)

Talking point: Efforts to reverse the ban have broad support from some of the country’s largest employers. The Business Roundtable, a group of more than 200 chief executives from top U.S. companies, is one of several business organizations that has joined the Chamber of Commerce’s suit. Joshua Bolten, the group’s CEO, called the ban “misguided,” saying it “will disincentivize investments in workers and make it harder for companies to compete globally.” Critics of non-competes, which are particularly common in the tech industry, say the rules stifle workers’ ability to switch employers and secure better pay. In Canada, Ontario banned non-compete clauses in 2021. The federal government updated the Competition Act last year to crack down on wage fixing and non-poaching agreements between employers, but there’s no federal ban on non-compete agreements between employees and employers.
