Eric Lombardi, director of advisory at consulting firm Electric Mind, will chair Build Toronto. Like its parent group Build Canada, the organization is publishing memos fronted by business leaders proposing policy, political, technology and program ideas for the city. (The Logic)
Talking point: Build Canada launched in February as a “short-term project” tied to the spring federal election. It’s published dozens of memos calling for overhauls of funding programs and promoting government use of technology, and launched tools drawing on Ottawa’s open datasets. In June, Build Canada became permanent, naming former Patch executive Lucy Hargreaves as CEO and announcing plans for chapters across the country. Build Toronto’s first memos call for a strong executive branch at city council and partisan municipal elections, changes to zoning rules to allow larger apartment buildings, and the use of platform screen doors on the subway.
