Talking point: Encore is working to become a supplier of renewable energy, as opposed to simply developing projects, and brought its first two solar farms into service in Maine last month. The financing is a combination of loans and tax equity, a common form of funding for renewable energy projects in which investors become part owners in a project and earn a return from its tax benefits and cash flows. Brookfield is one of the world’s largest investors in green power, with US$103 billion worth of assets under management in five continents. In March, the Alberta government announced restrictions on renewable energy projects that will affect Brookfield Renewable’s Sunrise Solar project near the Montana border.
