The South Korean company will manufacture EV battery insulation panels and cell sheets at the 71,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, which is slated to open in June 2024 and create 144 jobs. The Ontario government will provide $1.5 million. (The Logic)
Talking point: The Bobaek plant will supply Stellantis and LG Energy Solution’s NextStar battery cell plant, which became a source of contention when Windsor, Ont., police reported they expected 1,600 temporary South Korean workers to work there. NextStar later clarified it plans to employ more than 4,000 Canadians in full-time and temporary roles, and about 1,600 technicians largely from South Korea who would be employed by external suppliers to assemble, install and test equipment. Bobaek will add another 71,000-square-foot adjacent plant costing $25 million to $30 million. It will employ 70 additional workers and is set to be built in 2025. Bobaek said it selected Windsor also because of its proximity to other LG and Samsung customers in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.
