Talking point: On the morning of U.S. President Donald Trump’s inauguration, Boardy sent users emails mimicking the politician’s speaking style that appraised their appearance in LinkedIn profile photos. Recipients, including a number of women, found the message gross and inappropriate. Boardy’s CEO Andrew D’Souza later called the email campaign a mistake, and said he would be undertaking personal coaching as a consequence. The startup’s work with Diversio is another part of its response. Researchers have consistently found that AI systems’ output exhibits bias that mimics the data on which they are trained, even before users set them to ill-conceived tasks.
