Talking point: The MPs reported they’re very worried that a Rogers-Shaw merger will reduce competition and affordability. They’re “puzzled” by the arguments that the combination will improve the market, and warned that “Rogers has linked a number of commitments to the merger that the government has no way to enforce.” (Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne said yesterday that he wouldn’t let Rogers gobble up Shaw’s wireless spectrum licences “wholesale.”) More broadly, the committee said the Competition Act needs a review and the Liberal government should consider redesigning the telecom market to separate the builders and owners of its infrastructure from the service providers that use it.
