Talking Point: The movie is based on Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff’s 2015 book Losing the Signal: The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of BlackBerry.
It details how the maker of the once-ubiquitous smartphones began above a bagel shop in Waterloo, Ont., rose to global popularity, and faced off with Apple and Samsung only to eventually lose market share to them. Executive chair and CEO John Chen, who took the helm at BlackBerry in 2013, has led the company’s transformation from a handset company to one focused on cybersecurity and automotive software. It finally halted support for its iconic phones in January 2022.
