Talking point: BenchSci makes AI tools that help medical researchers summarize existing scientific literature on disease and design experiments to test new ideas. The startup has raised US$174 million to date, per PitchBook data, including a $95-million Series D announced in May 2023. BenchSci CEO Liran Belenzon told the Globe that the layoffs aren’t a response to problems with its business, but rather because it can replace some human work with AI. In July, he joined several tech leaders in a trend started by Shopify’s Tobi Lütke, declaring his firm “AI-first,” requiring that teams check whether the technology can handle a task before hiring someone to do it.
