Talking point: Canada imposed 100 per cent tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles and 25 per cent on Chinese steel and aluminum last October, following a move by the United States. In response, China launched an “anti-discrimination” probe, as well as an anti-dumping investigation into imports of Canadian canola and some chemicals. Canada’s exports of the newly tariffed products to China totalled about $3 billion last year. Canada’s federal government rejected the premise and findings of China’s investigation, saying Ottawa’s “support for fair, rules-based trade” has included “addressing China’s non-market policies and practices that artificially lower production costs and distort markets.”
