Talking point: Scammers have been impersonating IT help desks to target Canadian lawyers. LawPro, which insures firms, said this month that cyberattacks on Ontario law firms have recently resulted in “unauthorized withdrawals” totalling millions of dollars. McCarthy Tétrault’s cybersecurity firm found no further breaches beyond the client-related data. A source told The Globe and Mail that 31,000 of the firm’s files were stolen. In 2027 LawPro plans to raise premiums, in part to offer $1 million to cover losses related to social engineering campaigns. Law firms aren’t the only businesses grappling with the issue. Fintrac, which regulates financial firms, warned this week of more AI-driven organized crime, while tech companies like OpenAI are training workers to recognize corporate infiltration campaigns.
