Google’s Owlchemy Labs will use the Edmonton-based startup’s technology to launch a single-player mode of its virtual reality game Dimensional Double Shift in the first half of 2027. (The Logic)
Talking point: Founded in March 2023 by researchers from DeepMind’s Alberta outpost, Artificial Agency (AA) has developed AI agents which game developers use to autonomously run characters, encounters and other features. In the case of Double Shift, typically a four-player game, the technology will control the behaviour of three AI teammates that sub in for the humans. “It feels like you’re interacting with a real intelligence,” said Brian Tanner, AA’s CEO. The firm has seen a lot of demand for such applications. To make the technology financially viable for Owlchemy, AA built it a custom, small AI model that’s much cheaper to run than the frontier systems that power ChatGPT or Claude. “This isn’t a tech demo,” said chief technology officer Alex Kearney. “This is something that is going to be an integral part of the game.”
