Talking point: The program will expand to Mac computers with M1 chips next as well as other countries throughout 2022. Apple did not immediately respond to The Logic’s request for comment on when a Canadian rollout is expected. Customers will be able to order parts online and receive credits toward their orders if they return used parts for recycling. Apple previously opposed letting customers repair their devices, using tactics such as lobbying, fear mongering, and withholding tools and information. The change comes as the “right to repair” movement has heated up, and after U.S. President Joe Biden’s executive order encouraged the Federal Trade Commission to prevent electronics makers, such as Apple, from restricting DIY repairs. One tech analyst told The Wall Street Journal the change won’t mean much for most Apple consumers and “is just largely for show.”
