Apple’s service will allow users who pay a subscription fee to access a library of video game titles. The company began discussing a subscription service with game developers in the second half of 2018. Apple wouldn’t comment on the video game streaming service, though it’s reportedly in the early stages of development, meaning it could ultimately be abandoned. (Cheddar)
Talking point: Apple would be the latest major player to eye the video game streaming industry. Last week, The Denver Post reported that Amazon was also working on a video game subscription service, while Microsoft’s beta is reportedly slated for sometime in 2019. Chinese tech giant Tencent launched a video game store and social platform called WeGame in July 2018. Apple’s service is focused on mobile games, an area that would boost Apple’s App Store revenues in particular—Brandon Ross, an analyst at BTIG, told Cheddar that the majority of its App Store revenue comes from its games. Any of these new services could be a hit to Stream, the largest PC gaming platform in the world.
