Talking point: The news app is a small part of Amazon’s plans to grow its advertising revenues. The company currently has little clout in the ad market compared to its fellow FAANGs, earning US$3.38 billion in the fourth quarter of 2018 compared to Facebook’s US$16.6 billion and Google’s $32.6 billion. Amazon is also hoping its news app will make Fire TV, Amazon’s media player, more competitive for viewers and advertising dollars with chief rival Roku. Roku’s news channel includes content from ABC News and Yahoo, and Amazon has been in discussions for its new service with Verizon, which owns Yahoo Finance and Yahoo News. But unlike its rival, Amazon plans to offer local news content, by signing contracts with local news stations.
