Talking point: This is a way for Amazon to expand its delivery fleet as the company looks to make free one-day shipping the default for its Prime customers. It could also help it save money over time, since the employees—who will own the businesses and become contracted by Amazon once they start them—will help offset some of the costs associated with starting a delivery service, like vehicle leasing. However, the company isn’t completely cutting off third-party delivery firms. Amazon is spending US$800 million on its Prime one-day shipping plans, and will use existing partners like UPS for its rollout.
