Amazon is reportedly in talks to buy the Louisiana-based communication satellite operator, which has a market capitalization of US$9 billion. SpaceX was rumoured to be in talks to snap Globalstar up in October. (Financial Times)
Talking point: Canada’s MDA Space is a key Globalstar supplier, with contracts to deliver it two sets of satellites for a combined $1.5 billion. Most of that—$1.1 billion for over 50 units—is in a more recent deal, however, and since SpaceX manufactures its own Starlink satellites, MDA’s share price slid last autumn on the news that Globalstar might land with SpaceX. Amazon also makes its own satellites, but it’s playing catch-up; its Leo satellite subsidiary (formerly called Project Kuiper) has carried out just eight of a projected 100-plus launch missions, putting 212 satellites into space out of an expected fleet of about 3,000. SpaceX has more than 10,000. MDA’s share price ticked up five per cent Thursday.
