Thirteen additional cities—including Waterloo, Quebec City and Victoria—will now have free one-day delivery through Amazon Prime. In Quebec, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking to invest up to $1 billion over 10 years through its cloud division, according to provincial government documents. (La Presse, Amazon)
Talking point: Amazon now has 11 distribution centres either complete or approved to be built in the country; the increased footprint allows the company to offer one-day delivery, putting heavy pressure on competing retailers. Amazon is also looking to take more of the cloud market in Canada. As The Logic reported in August 2018, Amazon started pushing for government contracts worth billions after shortlisting Toronto for its HQ2. AWS is currently constructing a 155,000-square-foot centre in Varennes, Que., on which it’s committed to spending $81 million so far.
