Google’s parent company is reportedly looking to buy Waterloo-headquartered AdHawk Microsystems, which makes eye-tracking technology for smart glasses, for US$115 million, including US$15 million contingent on future payments. The company is backed by EssilorLuxottica, Samsung Ventures and Canadian venture capital firm Brightspark. (Bloomberg)
Talking point: The race to create smart glasses is heating up, from Meta looking to buy a stake in Ray-Ban parent EssilorLuxottica, to Apple conducting an internal study on what products are available in the market right now. AdHawk makes chips, software and hardware for eye-tracking in glasses, which can then inform research on eye health, behavior and the mental state of the wearer. Google purchased a different Waterloo-based smart-glasses maker, North, for a reported US$180 million in 2020.
