Sidewalk Labs is looking at using the sale of bonds backed by tax revenue and development charges to pay for transit connecting the Quayside development on Toronto’s waterfront to the downtown core, CEO Dan Doctoroff said Wednesday. Last week, he told The Canadian Press that Sidewalk Labs could pull out of the Quayside project if transit isn’t built. (Bloomberg)
Talking point: Extending the New York City subway to the Hudson Yards site was a crucial piece of the project, the largest-ever private development in the U.S. Doctoroff championed Hudson Yards, as deputy mayor of the city. As CEO of Sidewalk Labs, he moved the company’s office to 10 Hudson Yards. But his Toronto transit plans may be more difficult to achieve than those in New York. Sources within the provincial government told media that the province would never approve a reported plan under which Sidewalk Labs would build transit in exchange for tax revenues and developer fees. And, ongoing discussions between the province and the city to upload the subway system to Queen’s Park are a further complication.
