Talking point: The move comes as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens tariffs on Canadian products, including oil, shedding new light on the province’s oil and gas dependence. Established in 1976 and managed by the Alberta Investment Management Corporation, the heritage fund was designed to collect non-resource revenue and help steer the economy away from natural resources. Initial hopes for the fund were never realized, however, and Alberta officials acknowledged on Wednesday that if the province had been reinvesting revenue from the start, it would already be worth upwards of $250 billion today, generating more than $20 billion annually.
