ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok have “detailed, accurate knowledge” of current events consistent with a large-scale ingestion of Canadian journalism titles, according to a report from the Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy. The chatbots rarely give source attribution, and seemingly access paywalled sites including The Logic to provide answers to queries, the report said. (The Logic)
Talking point: The report suggests AI companies should be subject to the Online News Act, which passed into law in 2023 and aimed to compel Big Tech companies to compensate news publishers for content. The act’s language doesn’t capture AI companies, which absorb and synthesize news content rather than index and display it.
