Talking point: Countries in the EU and the European Economic Area will be able to purchase the therapy from Eli Lilly. Some European countries have already placed orders this year and have available inventory. The deal secures future access to doses if needed. Vancouver-based AbCellera helped develop bamlanivimab, and receives a royalty on Eli Lilly’s sales of the treatment, which fuelled the Canadian company’s first- and second-quarter revenue. Despite Health Canada authorizing the treatment and the federal government purchasing doses, they have mostly been unused in the country. Antibody treatments, like that made by Eli Lilly, have been in high demand in the U.S. recently, where those who’ve shunned vaccines and contracted COVID-19 want it.
