Talking point: The game, developed with Roblox and Media.Monks, is available worldwide for the next month. Earlier this week, Walmart also entered the metaverse through Roblox with two spaces: Walmart Land showcases fashion, beauty and other items through interactive experiences, and Universe of Play shows off virtual toys, conveniently before the holiday season. They’re among a growing number of brands using Roblox as a means of reaching consumers—the platform claimed an average of 52.2 million daily users in the second quarter of 2022. In addition to letting brands like Tims build games on its platform, Roblox is increasingly eyeing advertising as a source of revenue—it currently earns almost all its money from sales of its in-game currency. Any such move will be complicated by the fact that roughly half its users are under the age of 13. There may not be many coffee drinkers among them.
