Talking point: All four gender-focused funds in Canada have struggled to attract investors, despite reports that gender-balanced executive teams yield higher returns, and commitments from major investors like Goldman Sachs to avoid firms that don’t improve their gender diversity. It’s not just investing. New data from Statistics Canada shows that 61 per cent of Canadian firms had boards made up entirely of men in 2017; 28 per cent had one woman director; and just 11 per cent had more than one. Overall, 18 per cent of corporate board seats in Canada were held by women in 2017, up from 17.8 per cent the previous year.
