Canadians feel like they get a bad deal when it comes to their mobile phone plans. From sky-high prices to poor service and lack of competition, the country’s major telco companies get their fair share of criticism. And, as a result, they’ve become an easy target for politicians.
But how competitive is Canada’s telecom industry? And what are the Big Three—Bell, Rogers and Telus—doing to invest in infrastructure across the country? From regulation to innovation, there’s a lot of work for both industry and government to do to make sure that Canadians get the best deal, and the best service.
So what’s the right path forward? A looming trade war with the U.S. and major political changes in Ottawa make predicting the future harder than ever, but we’ve gathered some of the industry’s most important voices to help explain why the future of telecom companies is an important issue for all Canadians—and Canadian businesses.
Watch the video below for an in-depth discussion tackling all the big questions.
The conversation was hosted by David Reevely, Ottawa correspondent at The Logic, with Ian Scott, former chairperson of the CRTC, Robin Shaban, chair and co-founder of the Canadian Anti-Monopoly Project, and Maher Yaghi, managing director and analyst for Scotiabank, featuring opening remarks from Stephen Schmidt, vice-president of telecom policy and chief regulatory legal counsel at Telus.
