Talking point: This is the first annual decrease in household wealth since the Great Recession, mainly caused by a fall in the stock market and a slowdown in property sales. Alberta was hardest hit, with a 4.2 per cent drop in household wealth compared to 2017, as Albertans tended to invest more in equity markets that people in other provinces, and global stock markets dropped at the end of 2018. In comparison, household wealth in Ontario remained relatively flat, dropping 0.0 per cent, just $62. That’s partly a result of Ontarians focusing on non-stock liquid assets like bank deposits. However, a number of the lowest indicators flagged in the report have turned around since 2018. The stock market is up, and real estate in the Toronto area has risen.
