The carbon removal initiative, launched in 2022 and co-founded by the Ottawa-based e-commerce giant along with Google, Stripe, Meta and McKinsey Sustainability, purchased just over 667,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide across 16 deals this year, according to The Logic’s analysis. (The Logic)
Talking point: Frontier seeks to make it more financially feasible for startups to remove CO2 from the atmosphere by effectively providing revenue for the CO2 they successfully capture and store. Frontier’s latest deals include a contract to buy more than 224,000 credits from Vancouver-based CO280, which is retrofitting a pulp and paper mill to capture carbon emitted from biomass. It also signed a roughly 72,000-credit contract with CREW, a Connecticut-based company that builds special reactors to speed up and capture the breakdown of certain CO2-rich minerals. Shopify has backed a number of carbon removal startups through its Sustainability Fund; the company’s CEO Tobi Lütke sees the effort as crucial in developing the nascent CO2 removal sector.
