The Montreal-based firm, formerly called SNC-Lavalin, will provide design, engineering and procurement services, while Romanian company EnergoNuclear will handle construction, commissioning and operation. The reactors, which will be built in Romania, will be the first to use the Canadian-developed Candu technology—which uses less mined uranium than comparable reactors—since 2007. The federal government previously announced $3 billion in export financing to help support the project. (The Logic)
Talking point: AtkinsRéalis’s nuclear reactor business has soared recently. The company reported a record $3.2 billion in new contracts for the three-month period that ended Sept. 30, more than tripling from a year earlier. On Wednesday, it announced a 10-year joint contract worth US$2.3 billion to operate and maintain nuclear assets for the U.S. Department of Energy. The demand has prompted AtkinsRéalis to nearly double its revenue forecast in its nuclear unit for 2024, from $1 billion last year.
