The Montreal-based construction giant is selling 10.01 per cent of the Ontario toll highway; it will retain a 6.76 per cent stake. The sale comes as SNC-Lavalin faces multiple potential corruption-related charges and significant financial difficulties. The company’s stock fell 30 percent from $48.50 in late January to $33.92 at close Friday. (Canadian Press)
Talking point: Highway 407 was a lucrative revenue stream for SNC-Lavalin, with CIBC calling it a “cash cow” in 2017. However, the company needed a cash infusion now, which it’s getting under the terms of the deal: $3 billion at close, plus $250 million over 10 years. That cash can cushion SNC-Lavalin if it is barred from bidding on federal contracts, it could also help the company if it pulls out of Saudi Arabia in the wake of the kingdom’s diplomatic tensions with Canada.
