The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference will contest the Canada Industrial Relations Board’s back-to-work order and plans to confront the federal cabinet at its retreat in Halifax this week, union leader Paul Boucher said in a statement. But the union obeyed Saturday’s order and sent its members back to their jobs at Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City, restoring the country’s two biggest railways to life. Talking point: Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon issued a directive last week to send the union and railways to binding arbitration for their remaining labour disagreements, and the labour board’s orders said only the Federal Court can decide whether what he did is constitutional. Unifor leader Lana Payne pledged her big union’s support for the Teamsters’ fight against the “rail cartel” and called for a review of the railways’ economic power. The Teamsters posted a graphic depicting the Liberals as Chicken Littles on workers’ rights.
