The Montreal-based payments firm could file to go public as soon as today, according to Bloomberg. Lightspeed plans to list on the Toronto Stock Exchange in the coming weeks, and has tapped BMO and National Bank Financial to run the sale of shares. Lightspeed hasn’t specified what valuation it’s seeking, but The Globe and Mail reported in November 2018 that the company is looking to be valued at over $1 billion. (Bloomberg)
Talking point: Canadian tech IPOs are few and far between. In May 2015, Shopify raised a total of US$131 million (about $173 million at the time) at a US$1.27-billion valuation (about $1.67 billion at the time). Lightspeed would be the biggest Canadian tech company to go public since Real Matters; after the latter went public in 2017, Vision Critical and Hootsuite were among others expected to IPO, though both companies—once open about those plans—have since gone quiet. Hootsuite founder Ryan Holmes told The Globe and Mail in 2018 that the company didn’t need additional capital.
