The San Francisco-based firm dismissed Leopold Aschenbrenner, a safety researcher, and Pavel Izmailov, a reasoning researcher, a source told The Information. OpenAI did not immediately respond to The Logic’s request for comment. (The Information, The Logic)
Talking point: Both researchers have worked on safety measures at the ChatGPT maker. Aschenbrenner was a member of the firm’s “superalignment” team, established last July by Canadian Ilya Sustskever, the company’s chief scientist, to ensure the incredibly smart AI it’s looking to build would keep doing what humans want it to. Sustskever was a key player in the November 2023 attempt to oust Sam Altman as OpenAI CEO, and has retained his title, though neither he nor the company has made any public statement about his future there. (Last month, Altman called him “a credit to humanity.)
