Talking point: If built, one or more SMRs would be the first nuclear reactors in Alberta, which has expressed a willingness to build nuclear capacity in order to meet rising electricity demands. The joint announcement comes as extremely frigid temperatures—combined with natural gas facility breakdowns and near-zero wind and solar output—put the province’s electrical grid on the verge of collapse this weekend. OPG is already building its own fleet of small reactors at its Darlington site in Ontario, set to come online in 2028. The two companies reportedly expect the first Alberta SMR would be completed around 2035.
